Mysuru’s Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens is taking proactive steps to safeguard its animal residents from the upcoming summer’s scorching heat. As the zoo anticipates a surge in visitors towards late February, it has implemented various cooling systems to provide relief from the sun’s intense rays.
Cooling Facilities for Comfort
To ensure animal comfort, the zoo authorities have equipped cages with water nozzles. They have constructed an artificial pond for elephants, deer, and wildebeests. Water sprays from nozzles, offering a refreshing respite. Additionally, they have set up coconut feather platforms, allowing animals to rest in the shade.
Diet Adjustments and Specialized Cooling
The zoo has modified the animal feed menu, prioritizing water-rich foods to help them stay hydrated. Muniraju, the Range Forest Officer (RFO), mentioned that gorillas prefer cooler areas. So, the authorities have installed air conditioners and fans in their sleeping quarters.
Diverse Animal Residents
The Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens houses an impressive animal collection, including ten elephants – the highest in any Indian zoo. Over the years, a total of 34 elephants have resided here, with some relocating to other Mysuru zoos. The zoo boasts five green anacondas, provided by the Colombo Zoo. Notably, it is India’s sole zoo accommodating chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, white rhinos, and cheetahs.
Rich History and Easy Access
Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar established the zoo in 1892, initially reserving it for the royal family’s exclusive visits. Public access began in 1920. After India’s independence, the Mysuru State Government’s Department of Parks and Gardens took over the zoo.
Visitors can easily reach the zoo, located approximately 3 km from Mysuru’s city bus stand and 2 km from Mysuru Palace. Regular city buses run to and from the zoo. Alternatively, visitors can hire auto-rickshaws, Jataka Gaadi (horse carts) from Mysuru Palace, or cabs to explore other tourist attractions.
With its rich legacy and diverse animal collection, the Mysuru Zoo’s proactive measures ensure a comfortable experience for visitors and its furry and feathered residents during the scorching summer months.
