Mitchell Marsh has been officially named as Australia’s captain for the T20 World Cup, leading a strong 15-member squad. Marsh, who has been leading the T20I side on an interim basis for the past year, will have the services of experienced campaigners like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, and Adam Zampa.
Agar, Green Make Comebacks
Ashton Agar and Cameron Green, who haven’t played T20Is for Australia since late 2022, have earned recalls to the squad. Agar’s inclusion is aimed at bolstering the spin department, keeping in mind the slow conditions expected in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, Green’s versatility as a batting all-rounder has earned him a spot ahead of the in-form Jake Fraser-McGurk.
Notable Absentees and Backup Options
Australia’s squad does not feature Steve Smith, who was part of the T20I side as recently as February 2024. It’s the first time since 2014 that Australia will be without Smith at a World Cup. Other players who missed out include Aaron Hardie, Matt Short, Xavier Bartlett, Jason Behrendorff, and Spencer Johnson. However, the selectors have left the door open for potential changes, stating that they will continue monitoring players who missed out on the preliminary squad.
Australia will kick off their World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 6, aiming to lift their maiden T20 World Cup title.
